Before Bakken had time to look through his nudibranch literature to determine what species the bright pink nudibranch was, Svensen e-mailed him again. He had figured out what species it was with the help of the Facebook group NE Atlantic Nudibranchs.

– It's Hancockia uncinata, Svensen wrote in his second e-mail. This species has never before been found in Norway or indeed Scandinavia, but is known from the British Isles and the coast of Biscayne Bay in France.

Tiny and pink

Hancockia uncinata is often pink but has also been found with greenish color with scattered white pigmentation. It har several pairs of hand-shaped cerata shaped along the back, and the rhinophores are in a sheath. It only grows to 14 mm, Bakken writes on his nudibranch blog.

Erling Svensen is very happy about the find and tells Dykking that he found it just in time to include it in the new edition of the book «Dyreliv i havet» (marine life of Norway) which is due to hit the shelves medio October.

The 800-page book will contain around 900 marine species from Norwegian waters. As of now, there are no plans to have it translated to English, even though a previous edition was. The book can be pre-ordered on www.dyrelivihavet.no.
