In the beam from your torch, you can discover what the inhabitants of the reef are up to at night, and you'll often see things you don't during the day.

Choose the right spot
If you already know the dive site from the daytime, navigation is much easier. Don't plan a very long or deep dive, and choose a place without current or waves.
Torch and backup
Night diving demands a proper dive light with enough burn time, as well as a backup torch in case your main runs out of power or dies for other reasons. Make sure both are fully charged.
Signalling at night
Draw a circle on the bottom to show your buddy that you're OK, or move it rapidly sideways to attract attention. Don't shine your light in your buddy's face – it ruins the night vision!
The story behind Diversnight
A broad beam is best
A super powerful torch it not necessarily an advantage, and may scare away marine life. A torch with a broad beam is best and allows you to see more.
Bring your compass
Navigating underwater is more difficult in the dark, so bring a compass. If you surface in the wrong place it may be difficult to get back on shore.
Mark your entry/exit
To make it easier to find your way back at the end of the dive, it's a good idea to mark the exit point with a strobe light or a glowstick.

Know your gear
To avoid problems it's important to use gear you're comfortable with and know well. A night dive is not the right time to try out new equipment.
Be safe and prepared
Have a knife, scissors or line cutter easily available. This is even more important in the dark when it's more difficult to see fishing lines and other obstacles.
Stay with your buddy
Make sure you don't lose your buddy. If one of you has to surface to search for the other it creates unnecessary stress and potentially a dangerous situation.

Bring a headlamp
A good tip is to bring a headlamp which you can use while getting ready. It frees up your hands, and you don't have to burn the battery on your main torch.
Make sure all your batteries are fully charged, and remember to turn on the backlight on your computer before you jump in. Good luck, and enjoy!
In the fall and winter, depending on your location, you'll find that most dives really are night dives – even during the day. A night diving specialty course is a worthwhile investment which allows you to extend your diving season.
Both PADI, SSI and CMAS offer night diving specialty courses. Just ask your local dive shop and they will get you sorted!
